using the W key

Just curious on the w key and how effective it is? I have been using it when my infantry have been attacking tanks, either using at rifle or whatever else uses ap ammo but is this as effective as just firing normally? I seem to have a lot of success with both

You use it to select a specific weapon rather than firing the whole lot. It does not make the weapons more or less effective

Re: using the W key

Using the W key is useful if you have a decent anti-tank weapon (and don't want to trigger an assault and suffer the possible adverse consequences of same). My later war UK platoon HQs will usually use the W key to fire only the PIAT at any armour at 1 hex.

Against a soft target - it is probably not worth it.

Any other things - probably best to simply turn off any weapons you want reserved (eg a satchel charge perhaps) and then press F/click on target.

As Mobhack says the only real use for the W key is for infantry squads attacking adjacent armour. RPG teams tend to fire rather than assault anyway

I use it a lot for firing the tank's MG instead of his cannon HE round.
I know that I could turn off the main cannon, but not with keyboard - it is possible with tedious clicking, so tapping "W2" is much quicker.

Simple answer ammo conservation.

Re: using the W key

I rarely use the "w" key.

Infnty with AT in the 1st slot will use it first in assualt and if in the last slot will attempt to suppress with small arms before AT.

AFV's on the other hand,selective use of guns that are too far out of range to be effective and to save ammo,is a good idea, as with low load-out AP rounds.
