Interesting note

While playing SP with Bandar Log I noticed that Ichtyids was an capable overall compliment to most nations for early game. While recruitment grounds are somewhat sparse at 10 g and 3 r they could easily massed and their nets would temporarily immobilize units most of the time , in addition netted units would suffer dramatic def losses until they remove the net. Works quite well for swarming early thugs and water blesses, more importantly with a morale of 12 they can usually survive to unload their nets and they would usually rout after PD.

I find that having a squad of them set to hold and attack largest really rounds out my armies against rushes and nasty surprises.
Sure they don't survive well without shields, but for their price I could afford 10 of them for every elephant sent at me.

As Bandar Log I scripted armor of Achilles for my mage, gave him 20 of my scaly friends and I found that it could take down Heavy thugs with PD and light thugs without; all for the combined cost of 200g and a lv 1 earth mage. The armor of Achilles would break enemy prot while the Ichtyid nets would neutralize their def.

Sure this won't hold up late game but for mid game this is a cheap and quick counter. It's even more advantageous if you consider that the enemy has to waste mage turns equipping/summoning the thug or buying expensive sacred while your earth mages are contributing (or not recruited yet) and waiting to be called into service.

Compared to alternatives only the gladiator performs better in this role and one losses them after a single battle.

Thanks for the tip!

Let me know if you still think they are a staple after a few MP games.

Yeah, nets are awesome. But most units that have them are rather fragile. And the nets are easily wasted on chaff.

Try the MA spider nation. They have webs.

They also have a poor time late game, besides I'm going for a cheap and universal (if somewhat uncommon) counter.

this is a good tip. i beleive it could be usefull in MP also. perhaps not a steady diet of it, but as the kitty said, seems plausible vs early thugs(and that is something i often struggle against)

So I was just playing casually today when I noticed (atleast for CBM) the Kappa can use Koppo as an attack:

Koppo

Damage: -3 (Armor Piercing)
Attack: -3
Defense: 0
Length: 0
Limp

What?!?!?!?!? How did I miss these guys! Add berserk & quickness and these guys can cripple early-mid SCs with one hit. (quickness shouldn't be a problem since it takes water to find the site)

They also get extra fatigue on land. But yeah, Koppo is great.

Is a net an area effect weapon, a target hit weapon, or something else?

Just wondering if it will hit a unit with a 40 defense.

Re: Interesting note

it will with 3X5 adjacent squares X 2 def loss for every attack X 2 for quickness and berserk attack bonus.

Re: Interesting note

If it's an ordinary attack, etherealness, defense of 40, and vine shield should hold up.
