Helicopters being bombed by airplanes

1 Attachment(s)
Sorry if this has been reported before, couldn't find anything after a quick search.

I was somewhat amused today when I noticed my high flying attack helos being bombed, and more than that being hit, by fighter planes. The helo had been stationary for a few turns, meaning it was also being targeted by ATGMs and such which is not a bug. However I would imagine that a high flying helo being hit by unguided bombs dropped from a fighter bomber might not be intentional behavior.

Attached is a save file replicating the situation. The helos in the saved game are French Tigres. During my regular play it happened with American Apaches so I would imagine it's not dependent on the type of helo being used. However both helos were armed with SAMs, which might or might not have something to do with being targeted by the bombs.

To see the reported behavior, end the current turn. North Korean MiGs will proceed to attack the helos. You might have to repeat a few times if the helos are too adept at shooting down the attacking planes.

Planes targeting helos does indeed happen on occasion & not bothering to do the replay it was hit by the bombs & not the planes cannon?
Droping bombs probably just happens as part of the attack run & the question is how big a bomb I suppose.
Even planes get caught in the blast from ammo dumps etc on occasion, doesnt actually have to hit them the shock wave can cause loss of control esp if stationary so doesnt ride out of the area.

NOT a "bug". Helos caught in an air attack take hits just like every other unit. "High" for a Helo is just not tree height not 5000 feet in the air

Unguided iron bombs hitting flying helos? That's an intended feature? I'm cool with that. I'm still a bit suspicious though since the bomb seems to hit every single time. Probably messes up the hit probability calculations somehow.

They are NOT being hit by the bombs, they are being hit by the explosive result of the impact of the bomb on the ground. I.E blast effect and shrapnel

Ok. Should artillery perhaps be able to hit helicopters in this manner as well?

Normal field artillery has nowhere near the blast effect of bombs but AKAIK Helos in the vortex of an artillery bombardment do have a chance of being taken down by the bombardment.

Bomb damage is calculated from Warhead size and HE Kill. A 500 pound bomb is WH 24 and HEK 48. A standard 155mm arty shell is WH 8 and HEK 21. BIG difference in the game

I've had helo's damaged by 82mm mortars landing in their hex once or twice.

RARE - But it does happen.

Ask any real pilot if they'd fly thru airspace occupied by incoming mortars/artillery and I'd bet ya 95%+ would say - NO FUGGIN WAY !
