OT: BOTF & WIN XP??
Ok, probally not the site to post this but you guys are the knowledge guys. Trying to play BOTF (Birth of the Federation) on my new computer, Windows xp, with the latest patch (v1.02) from Avault. Works fine until you actually start the game/load a game then it crashes to windows. Anyone else with win xp have this problem (and do alot of old games just not work with xp??, could'nt get carmageddon to work with xp either). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Re: OT: BOTF & WIN XP??
DOS games don't port well to XP, cause XP is finally a windoze OS that isn't DOS based. Some DOS games will work, and some won't. I think you can look on the M$ website for some tips.
Is that latest patch you mentionned a patch for BOTF? |
Re: OT: BOTF & WIN XP??
DS, BOTF will not run on XP because XP is NT, or Windows 2k all spiffed up and reboxed. BOTF is only compatible with Win98 or Win95. I sincerely doubt that it will even run in ME.
Sorry man, BOTF is a fun game, and I keep one PC alive that runs Win98 so that I can play all of my older favorite games. DF, DF2, BOTF, and others. |

Ahh, Boogers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif Ah well, there is a bright side, se4 is MUCH faster than when I played it on my p133 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif , no more 5 minute turns for an 8 player game after turn 10!

Tesco, thanx http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif , will have to try those out later when I collect some more knowledge (don't wanna screw with too many defaults till I know my way around xp fairly well). Good to know I don't have to fire up the p133 to play BOTF though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
As far as community goes, it rocks here. I belong to (or have belonged to) a few communities out there (dc comics board, diablo 1/2 etc) and have felt most 'at home' here. Makes me think of my old RPG days in my teen years (you know, back with the dinasaurs http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif ) [ 01 February 2002: Message edited by: Deathstalker ]</p> |
Re: OT: BOTF & WIN XP??
You should be ok because your ending the tasks at that time.
They will start up again when you reboot. you know C>A>T and just end the process. Experment. Worst case xp causes an error and just tells you about it. Here is a good link for you to read up on some of the administrative tasks of xp and all the bloatware its running http://www.extremetech.com/article/0...3D19543,00.asp http://www.xp-erience.org http://www.wincustomize.com/ I have a link to a fantastic article but it is at home So I will add another one later. |

Re: OT: BOTF & WIN XP??
BOTF works on xp.
I have played it on mine. Do you get to the commericals. What video card do you have. If it is one of the newer cards you may have to disable some of its more advanced features such as vgaprobe or heat monitoring etc... Just turn them off in the processes. The problem your describing is that your video card and xp are not handling the transformation to vga. P.S. get the latest drivers for your videocard. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel Those games will work in xp. For older games you might have to run the game in emulation mode (eg... 98 mode ) Hope this helps. |
