Custom Formation
I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, I tried to determine the most appropriate location.
I wanted to post details of a custom formation I have been using in Winspww2. The formation in question is of battalion strength and is designed to operate independently at the tactical level covering a frontage sufficient for one or two avenues of approach and a single objective. The formation is not supposed to be overly reliant on the specific equipment involved, and so I used winspww2 as it provides a better test bench than winspmbt. I used the German army in 1944-45 as they have the greatest variety in equipment (which is entirely my opinion.) 3 Mechanized Infantry Companies: 2 Mech Pltn w STG 44 1 STG Pltn 1 MG 42 3 Sd.Kfz. 251.1 1 Sd.Kfz. 251.9 attached to each company is: 2 Sd.Kfz. Gwr (Self Propelled mortar section) 2 PzKpfw V Panther G except for the third which is a Heavy/ Reserve Pltn which has: 2 Sd.Kfz. 124 Wespe 2 Sd.Kfz. 167 Stug IV Additionally the HQ has access to the following units 2 Half platoons Armored Recce: 2 Sd.Kfz. 234/2 Puma 1 AA Section: 2 Sd.Kfz. 7/1 I would like to specify what I mean by "Attached". This is a concept I gleaned form the Soviet Union, the attached group is a part of the formation and follows the orders of the battalion commander, but may be reorganized at any time either by attaching it to another formation augmenting it, or breaking it off and making a new formation (the tanks may be formed into a separate platoon.). I am interested in your opinions. thank you for reading. |
Re: Custom Formation
1)So there is a total of 2 tanks, or 2 tanks per company?
2)What kind of map could it cover? say with eastern-front-like forest density. |
Re: Custom Formation
2 tanks per company. as well as 2 sp mortars.
the total numbers are 4 tanks, 2 td's, 4 sp mortars, 2 sp artillery. the map that it could cover depends far too much on the opponent and other details of terrain. what is important is that it is likely the smallest formation that can independently acquire an objective. It has support, recon, and reserve elements. It is best suited to using one or two roads. I have been able to hold a 5 km frontage pinned at two points against an assault by a 5000 point soviet force. Granted the AI sucks, but I did it. The loses were approximately %33 of one platoon. the second platoon lost negligible forces and the reserve was not deployed. thus only 2/3 of the force contributed. |
