How does the game assign ranks to unit leaders? It seems to fluctuate a bit, especially higher up the chain.

element - corporal
Section Commander - Sgt
Platoon - Lt (2nd or 1st)
Company - Captain or Major

Aircraft - Lts of some variety

A0 - A lt Col I think.

Not that the rank really makes much difference in game terms, its more of a "decorative string".

In LCs individual formation commanders can get promoted (or higher-ups killed off) but there is no checking so you can have platoon leaders that "outrank" their company commanders. The experience, rally and command ratings are more important. Those increase as the campaign goes on, provided the leader survives etc.

I got the impression that the variety was for flavor, was curious as to how the game actually assigned them. The list you provided is exactly what I needed.

This can happen in battles too - quite often (certainly in SPMBT) where the code for "section" seems to trump that of "aircraft"; meaning Helo sections, for example, often have a Sgt in the lead aircraft and a Lt as his number 2.
