OT: \'BearShare\'

I am posting this here because I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer anywhere else and for every off topic question asked SOMEONE here has an answer. (cause this is where the smart people hang out I guess... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ).

BearShare, a 'napster-like' program, just freshly installed by my wife on our brand new computer, everything has been working fine for a week now. Then this thing has been installed and I can't seem to get Diablo II (yes I know...it's Diablo but for some reason I like it right now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif ) to stop spitting out 'Your connection has been interrupted' almost everytime I play. As well as the game having HUGE lag times and the action freezing up to the point where I click on something and a few seconds later I finally pick it up.

I have always been leary of a program that lets people download stuff off of my computer...seems a little scary. Is this 'BearShare' program my problem with Diablo???(Cable internet, should not be that slow or buggy) or am I just paranoid?? Anyone else have horror stories about this share program or is it really harmless?

All I know is that someone here will have an answer!

Does the program run in the back ground? IF so, perhaps disabling it while you play Diablo *shudder* would help.

I have never heard of this software, but I do know from past experience that if I leave Morphous (Another napster like set up) on, it will suck up all of my avaible bandwidth for people doing up loads. Not a good thing when your 30 feet from the flag and have less than 10 seconds on the game clock to cap it. Lag is evil.

Often, programs like that will do the old
"You have clicked close. This program will continue running, minimized and hiding in the system tray"

Check the tray on the bottom right, and you should be able to shut it down by rightclicking the icon and saying exit/quit (again).

I'd reccommend disabling the "Launch on startup" option (if there is one). Then you can just reboot before going Online. A good idea to maximize the resources available for a game anyways.

Re: OT: \'BearShare\'

I would guess it is BearShare. When someone is downloading files from you it will use up a fair amount of your up-speed so any info you (Diablo) is sending to the server takes more time. As a result, everything seems to be laggy in multiplayer.

Bear share also carries alot of spy ware. Make sure you delete all this extra unwanted but installed software.

If you want to find out about it just search on spy ware and bear share.

You will be surpriesed on the stuff they install for you. And its constantly eating your bandwidth.

Thanks guys, will use this program....for now. Looked deeper into it and it only runs when enabled, otherwise it is not present (good!), Battlenet must have had some of its famous 'LagFest' weeks.....Hopefully this addiction will end soon and I can get back to se4 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif (Gold should create an entire new addiction I believe http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )

I know the feeling... I hate it when I forget to close Morpheous and start playing a multiplayer game like StarCraft.
Anyway get Morpheous or KaZaA because they are a lot better that BearShare (IMHO).

I agree, Morpheus and Kazaa are much better file sharing programs. I had Bearshare for about 2 days before I decided it was a waste of time trying to get anything off of it.

I switched to Kazaa solely because they had the download-the-same-file-from-multiple-Users thing, so i can get stuff 5x.

On Bearshare I always seemed to be downloadeding off the slowest bastard on the lot. Now I download from the 5 slowest bastards on the lot and get everything really fast.

I have only one problem with Morpheus/Kazaa/etc., and that's the fact that you will rarely (if ever) find an audio file with better than 128kbps/44.1kHz quality. Other than that, those programs are superior to BearShare. BearShare has killed my connection more than once (I get a normal amount of incoming packets, and outgoing packets are slowed to about one per minute or stopped altogether; only fixed by reboot and reconnect).
