Vietnamese political support and indirect military aid to some of the enemies of China leads to a punitive Chinese invasion of northern Vietnam.

Simliar to the 1979 invasion this time around the battle quickly ignites the age old hostility between the two nations.

A brutal battle develops, a massive grudge match.

At the small vietnamses town of Tien Yen, Vietnamse regulars and militia forces make a stand. The PLA force assaulting the town is ordered to grind the defenders into the ground.

Mission: A mechanized unit will maneuver to flank the enemy from the rear by a Northerly route to thereby: Seize and hold the French Colonial Mansion complex, immediately proceed southerly to destroy all units within the locality of New Town, and quickly establish a line of defense at the Eastern edge of New Town.

Commander’s intent: Only after the mechanized unit controls the French Colonial Mansion and New Town, the 2nd Tank Company, the 5th and 6th Rifles, and the 7th Engineer Companies will move to contact with any remaining enemy units. The mechanized unit will flank the enemy from the rear, causing disruption to its C3 and destruction of its field artillery.

The flanking force, the mechanized maneuver unit is composed of the: A Fwd Obs (T1) team, the 1st Tank Company, and the 3rd Mech Company.

By Turn 20, the mechanized maneuver unit destroyed the enemy HQs (the A0 unit), all FA units and held the French Colonial Mansion and New Town. The battle was called at Turn 31 with a marginal victory. The Type 62’s did not fare well against the dug in T-55’s. I lost nearly the entire tank company at New Town.
