Much the best were probably the Harry Palmer films, based on Len Deighton novels, with Michael Caine:

'The Ipcress File' (1962) 'Funeral in Berlin' (1964) and 'Billion Dollar Brain' (1966).

Urelated, also check out Deighton's excellent novel 'Bomber' (1970).

And, if you will forgive me derailing your topic a bit, then check out the excellent books of Derek Robinson especially 'Piece of Cake' (1983) -not the crap British TV series- and 'A Good Clean Fight' (1993). Both great books.

Putin is not going to take on Nato. No reason to. Take over some countries with other means, perhaps. Take on Nato in a military way, I doubt it.
With the leadership of Nato countries made mostly of post cold war cowardice and political correctness, time will tell either way.

Yeah, I can't think of anything Putin could possibly gain that's worth confronting NATO militarily, the political leadership of many NATO countries is such that there's no need for a military confrontation ... one dirty look and they'll cave.

Back in the day, as a teenage soldier I read lots of Cold War turning hot stuff plus anything I could find in non fiction on Infantry soldiering from WWII onwards (I seem to recall much the most popular, non porno, books amongest the British Army Toms were the novels of Sven Hassel set in the German forces of WWII, mainly on the Eastern Front).

I eventually came to the firm conclusion that WWIII would be nasty, brutish and short...

Laugh if you will but one of my major concerns during the 70's and early 80's concerning WW III was that NATO would run out of ammo before they ran out of Soviets. And I mean this literally, I really don't think the majority of the munitions stockpiles were large enough. And I don't think there would have been time to manufacture and transport any significant amount.

UK used most of its war reserves of advanced, all aspect, Sidewinder air to air missiles to fight the Falklands Conflict, don't think they would have lasted too well against the Soviets.

The US Government agreed to sell the UK replacements on very short notice.
