Spacing of SAMs
I have been trying to find out how far apart missile systems, such as the SA6 or Patriot, are deployed in the field. I have been able to find numerous sites discussing how far out they can engage but not one on their actual ground deployment. Does anyone have a link or information?
Thanks. |
Re: Spacing of SAMs
As with most things military it depends on the number available and the tactical situation.
If you only have a few systems you may be forced to place them in non mutually supporting locations in order to best cover high value targets. On the other hand some potential target might be considered so vital you mass AA systems near it leaving other potential targets exposed. |

CIA doc on the deployment of Egyptian SA-6 assets November 1973

Re: Spacing of SAMs
Thanks, but not really giving much detail about actual dispersion. I will keep looking for something, as the SAMs are controlled by a central control unit I don't think they can just be deployed all over the place at will, same as artillery needs to be within CC.

Re: Spacing of SAMs
I found this link which talks about the Syrian air defence (or lack thereof) and there are also links to much more stuff, such as evaluation of air to ground guided missiles, smart bombs, etc.
http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-Syria...eployment.html **Ok, finally found a video of all things that talks about the Patriot successfully being deployed miles apart and still engaging. Now this is new technology as the video is from 2017, but for game purposes I would say that SAMS should be deployed at will as the player feels.** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm_N0xvqZMY And a very scientific pdf. As stated, it appears on how valuable the target is, and the threat area to be covered dictate deployment. https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...07904X9390086V |
