Gunship Aircraft vs Tank Mount AA Guns
Okay, I am a little confused, we have gunship aircraft as a unit to use in the game, cool.
My confusion comes from this, these aircraft aren't normally within range of ground-based AA guns on tanks and other vehicles. So why does the game allow the gunships to be targeted by AA guns on tanks and other AFVs? SAMs, and large-caliber AA guns sure that makes sense, but 12.5mm AAMG? Now I imagine it's the coding, it's aircraft so everything can fire at it, but that does take away from it being than different from the other aircraft in the game. |
Re: Gunship Aircraft vs Tank Mount AA Guns
Circling Gunship aircraft exist soley for Vietnam type scenarios to fire at targets that have little or no way of firing back. If the enemy has tanks or serious AAA capability, its not a target for gunships.
Gunships circle a target hex and blast that with area fire. Basically, grunt bashing as in "Puff the Magic Dragon". Thus gunships should be used at night, in a scenario against an enemy tailored for them (Basically terrorist/insurgency forces). Like level bombers and paratroops they are not there for regular play with mainstream armies. |
Re: Gunship Aircraft vs Tank Mount AA Guns
following on from Mobhack's great explanation: Remember too that "if the enemy is in range - so are you!" Gunships tend to have their weaponry zeroed in to a specific range, that of their "circle" and are armed with a wide range of guns but usually including 7.62mm miniguns...

Re: Gunship Aircraft vs Tank Mount AA Guns
I admit I never used them, as far as I remember, but it would make sense since they are big and slow to only use them against enemies who can't fire back at all. As for tanks and other 12.5mm firing back at it, do they actually hit it?

Occasionally.

Re: Gunship Aircraft vs Tank Mount AA Guns
As Mobhack said they are a specialist tool & never operate in an intense environment because as Wdll said they are large & slow. Loiter time is what they are about track & engage enemy at night is the doctrine. Armed spotter intel planes really.

Well ... they are cargo planes after all.

Re: Gunship Aircraft vs Tank Mount AA Guns
I have had riflemen shoot at anything that isn't a level bomber. I have had spotter planes, light helicopter gunships and scout helos shot down by riflemen and attack planes and heavy gunships shot at. In the Biafra war and IIRC in Katanga, riflemen firing in volley shot down aircraft. South African doctrine was never send Dragon Daks into an area where there were effect AA weapons.
