Today is exactly 80 years since the beginning of Warsaw ghetto uprising that was a first of big uprisings against German rule inside occupied Europe. If you ask why Jews in ghetto from both their underground military organizations ZZW and ŻOB start this upraising to my mind comes words of Marek Edelman (ZOB second in command):

That period in history is mainly remembered in faded B&W as in this iconic photo

As horrible as that photo is, it has an interesting array of non-standard German small-arms, namely two MP41, one MP28 and the goon in the background has a Danish made Suomi SMG, of all things.

Those units got the capture weapons and leftovers that didn't go to front-line units so they will be a mix of weaponry. The Suomi could have come from any number of places but it was reportedly used / available to the Polish police up to 1939 and that photo was taken in Poland so the most likely source

After 1943 upraising Germans created on former ghetto death camp Konzentrationslager Warschau "Gęsiówka" in the middle of aerial photo and leveled all the ruins to this what you see on that photo they stole and send to Reich everything with use of dethcamp slave labor even bricks and cables from ruins. Also ruins were use for mass executions of inmates and peoples catch in round-up's in Warszawa. Wall was preserved and whole area was called "neutral zone" Everyone who entered there without permission was killed without warning. Finally in 1944 when Warsaw upraising started that is what was seen by AK soldiers who move through ruins of former Warsaw Ghetto. We collected quite a bit of unit report documents for the Forgotten Hope 2 mod and sometimes it is interesting what the Germans used. Some of that stuff is not well represented in most games or the public image of World War 2. One example is that as the war drew to a close, the Germans started to issue large numbers of Beretta smgs in all kinds of units, as MP40 production was phased out. Because of that I tend to mix in a few MP379(i) in my late war scenarios, just as a detail.
The Suomi is more rare, but the elite Führer Grenadier Division actually had 59 on hand, source unknown.

....and they were quite happy to pick up and use whatever they found lying around that worked so you could give them virtually anything and be probably correct

Generally true, but there are certainly trends. For example, the Italian smgs started showing up in the "German weapons" area instead of "Captured Weapons" and were used as standard gear starting in late 44.
