Multiplayer gamers out there, need some input

OK, a friend and I are doing our first multiplayer game. Im in space combat with an AI race. Now my question is this, how can I give my ships specific orders to do in combat? I like being able to manually control my ships, but with simultaneous movement, cant. SO how do I do this so that my ships will take there equipment into consideration in a better way?

I went into combat with 3 cruisers on an enemy planet. My ships weapons were range 8 weapons. Yet, the dumb computer had them close to point blank range and I lost all 3 to his weapon platforms. There has got to be a way to get around this. Any help would be appreciated.

A "Maximum range" strategy sounds like the appropriate choice in that situation.

You can set the fleet strategy with the chess-piece icon, and you can set the individual ship strategy in the design window. (Click the stats/strategy switch to show the strategy options)

You can create and edit strategies in the Empire Options (crown) window.

You need Strategies.

First step (optional)- click the Empire Status button, the crown. In that screen, click on Strategies. Adjust the strategy you want. The default ones are decent, if a little weird sometimes (the backup plan for maximum range is.. point blank. Right.)

After that, go to the ship design screen. Click the stats/strategy button, then click on a ship. Here you can adjust which strategy you want to use. The default for attack ships is Optimal Weapons Range. Change that to Maximum weapons range, and your ships will stay as far away as they can.
