4x game

Hail all..

This is my first post... I've been playing se4gold for a month... liking a lot. I'll talk about the game later.

For now, I'm VERY curious. What tha heck is a 4X Game? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Looked everywhere... neither google nor acronym-finder could answer...

So, I ask you guys again ... what is 4x game? How did this term appeared?
