Hey Geo
You're the game admin for Dimension X, right? Do you mind setting that on Last player upload for a few days? My main computer just went 1$%@%@#$%, and there's no way I'm going to get my turns in.
Everyone else: anyone have any ideas here? First I tried to uninstall Global Operations, the public beta. It hit 100% then crashed. In the process it took out my TCP/IP, and windows wouldn't let me install. Various other weird crap started happening, so I figure it corrupted my installation of Windows. NP. I made a backup, then booted into DOS with my windows 98 CD. I fdisk, and it keeps popping up warning Messages about viruses because the boot sector is being written. So I go into my BIOS and turn that *off*. That's all I did- turned off the virus warning. Now my computer won't POST. Power on, lights flash, steady.. no beeps, no BIOS, no boot. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Ideas? I'm thinking of pulling the battery to reset the CMOS, I figure it might clear out whatever got into this thing. Phoenix-D |

Sounds like the boot sector is not in a happy place right now. Have u tried connecting the hard drive as a slave to another drive and formating/fdisking to try and fix the bootsector (if that is the cause of the problem) |
Re: Hey Geo
I can't explain the timing, but the Last time I saw something like that happen, it was because I had some memory go bad. You might want to check and see if your memory is OK. Of course, there are at least 40 kajilion (technical term http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) possible reasons that the computer won't post, but the memory might not be too tough to check out.

Re: Hey Geo
Popping the battery got it to POST. I already had the backup, so I just stuck in a bootable floppy (WHY?! does the bootable, installable, fdisk-including Win98 CD not have FORMAT?), formated, and so far so good.
of course, I don't have everything in yet, so watch it explode http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Phoenix-D |
Re: Hey Geo
Phoenix D,
There is a small chance that if there is a virus it could have written to any device with an upgradeable chip such at the bios, network card, or video card, This is rare but it would constantly reinfect a system and set off alarms. You might want to remove any card you do not need to run the system And yes, do check the memory. |
Re: Hey Geo
I feel your pain. I took the easy way out and just plunked down some cash this weekend to buy a new system. I was lucky though. Mine didn't totally die on me. It just locks up occasionally, the CD and printer stopped working, etc. It's three years old, so it was easier just to replace it.
The game will wait for you. Take your time. Geoschmo |
