Mine questions

I just got my copy of SE4 Gold in the mail and been enjoying it greatly. I do have questions about how mines work that I can't find answers to in the game or the manual.

1) Do mines have a percentage chance to hit a ship moving through a mined area or is it an automatic hit?

2) Do they attack allied ships also or only unallied ships?

3) What do you consider the most effective strategy for defending a warp point? In the demo I used combination of CSM satellites on the approach side of the warp point and DUC satellites on the exit side. Is it more effective to use mines in conjunction with this strategy or instead of it? What about stations when I get mobile shipyards?

I'm having so much fun playing this game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Mine questions

answer to questions

1) Automatic

2)unallied. Non-agression and below ( or non-intercorse)
3a)destory what is on the other side or build warp points over planets and fill the planets up with cargo. 3 has many answers it all depends on style.

I like bases with ship yards and cargo spaces supported with fighter launching bases.

it is an automatic hit. the number of mines in relation to the number and type of ships determines the results.

2) Do they attack allied ships also or only unallied ships?

Mines will not hit any ships you have a treaty with.

For me, it depends on who I am defending against.

Mines work until they send in sweepers and then it becomes a job to keep the field up.
Sats w/ missles work until pd is added to enemy ships.
same with bases.

So what I do for a good defense is build a base with missles and pd's, mine bays, sat bays, fighter bays and a ship yard.
it then turns into a self resupplying system.

another trick is to build a mine field on the point and then in the sectors around the point.
They send in the mine sweepers and clear the wp then move a fleet out from there without sweepers and boom. no more fleet.
