Crashes

Has anyone had this problem yet. Right after a large fleet battle ( about 30 ships on a side) a message pops up saying "access violation at address 0045B5D4 in module SE4.EXE Read at address 002300ED". This has happened a couple of times to me. The game then freezes and I have to CRTL ALT DEL out of it. I am running WIN XP with 256 Megs ram and 1.5 gigaherz. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Crashes

1 reinstall the game
2 load up a save file from such a big battle
3 does it still crash ?
4 if it does, try emulating the problem again, not using the save file
5 still crashing ? than it would be my guess that you have faulty ram ( frequent access violations are a symptom of this, but not necessarily ), IF you als experience freezes outside se4.you can find numerous progs on the net to test the stability of your ram, to be certain there's something ( not ) wrong with it.
6 just se4 freezing ? I'm out of ideas : )
ps : the big battles wouldn't be happening in the same sector as a sphereworld loaded up with weapon platforms etc ? that's a known crash bug, I think

I've seen the same problem running win98. It happens with less than 30 ships, and can happen durring the AI's turn, but I have also found that by reloading the saved game, the error doesn't happen, so I haven't had a saved game that had the problem to send to MM (had one happen in the same place twice, but didn't the third time).

Reloading the saved game seems to have worked. Thankfully, I had one just a couple of tunrs back. This will teach me to keep the autosave turned on. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Thanks for all the advice.

I seem to recall some players have problems with their CD drives, causing occasional crashes. The solution was to turn off the in-game music option, which plays music from the CD if there is one in the drive. It happens on battles because those prompt reading a battle music track. Not sure if that's what this is or not.
