Long Range Scanners?

What exactly do the long range scanners do? Do they detect ships in another sector, or do they detect what a ship is packed with in the same system?

They allow you to see the design, damage and cargo of an enemy vessel, as long as it is within the scanner's range.
- The ship must be visible, within range, and have no ant-scanner components. Scattering armor and/or scanner jammers will defeat your scan
- A sector refers to one square on the system map, not the galaxy map.

Be sure to take notes on what you see with the scanner, because as soon as the ship is out of scanner range, the program will "forget" what was there.

I just started building scanners in a simultaneaous movement game. So does this mean that in such a game a scanner would only be usefull if you happened to end your movement within scanner range of a ship? (which I believe is only 1 with the first level) If so they seem kind of useless.

Scanner range does increase quickly, but I suspect you could use the stepped movement replay and catch the ship with your scanner as you fly past.

Aren't the scanned designs added to your enemy ship designs archive? (Last time I used scanners was more or less 10 months ago http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

But there is still no record of the cargo and/or damage possessed by an individual ship.
