OT: Rate these games ;)

Been doing some other games now for some variety and wondering what others think.

Addicted to : Wizardry 8 (nearly finished, but considered starting again with new party to do things different)

Just bought: Might and Magic IX, and Starfleet Command ($9 bargin bin), havn't delved much into either yet.

Wondering about: Dungeon Seige, Civ III and Freedom Force.

Anyone....(Figure Atrocities will have an answer for the Starfleet Command series.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

Civ III has it's moments, but it is a bit too labor intensive.

Freedom Force is excellent (if you like comic style stuff) and reminds me of the Diablo/Baulder's Gate style engine. You can make your own heroes, though it is a bit of a pain to make a fun hero that is a low enough point cost to recruit onto your team. The story line is cool and the community is almost as ravid as the SE community (there are hundreds of skins for heroes and already people are working on mods). I do wish there was a 'danger room' where you could test your heroes - would be a nice addition. However, in the user forum someone managed to edit the multiplayer game to add bad guys on command to fight, so I imagine we are not to far from seeing a danger room mod.

I was wondering about Jedi Knight II, anyone?

The only one I've played was Starfleet Command. I wrote a long article comparing its gameplay to the Star Fleet Battles board game it was based on:

Civ3 isn't that bad. With the next patch and the promise to make aircraft and other bombards able to sink ships it should actually be relatively decent.

Starfleet command is the only one of those games I have...

SFCI
If your talking about SFC the original, its very good. If you ever played the pen and hex sheet game its based on, I'd call it a must buy. Otherwise, I'd just skip to SFCII for the Online dynaverse:

SFCII
Added a few more races and something much, much better: a persistant, Online universe where you all fight for control of quadrant. There are a couple servers with as many as 40 players on at a time. You pick a race to play on that server and take over the hexes by doing successful missions against it, some against other players. This alone makes it worth it, imho. Plus most races have many missions to go through, with race specific missions that have multiple storylines.

SFCII: Orion Pirates.
Same as SFCII, but with some new races (all pirates) and xships (powerful ships). If you buy OP, you can't play on the persistant SFC2 servers and vise versa, but there are around the same number of OP servers. SFC2 has a better single player experience.

SFCIII: The Next Generation.
They just announced that SFC will no longer be based on the SFC series of board games. They have a license to use the Next Generation storyline and ships and they are "streamlining" the play (4 shield facings instead of 6 for example). To be released this fall/winter.

In short http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif , I love Star Fleet Command. I still play SFC2 and OP even years later.

Starfleet Command is quite nice, imho. Almost no story, no involving metagame or anything, but a very solid tactical space combat engine with competent graphics. It does take some time to get into, but once you got the hang of it, you can experience some very involved and varied tactical combat. And no, I'm no trekkie : )

Re: OT: Rate these games ;)

only played Civ3, after playing se4, civ3 seems a bit simple, and becomes boring very quickly, then there are the limited editing capabilities http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif ...
the one good about civ3 is the AI, well, IMO it's better then the se4 AI (but then again, se4 is more complicated), so in civ3 you can roleplay a lot better, but in one of the patches they made the AI more aggressive, which makes roleplaying more difficult, since most encounters will end in war now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif .

I like CIV3 alot. You can't just go out and conquer the world so easily anymore, which is why alot of these guys don't like it so much. I have played WIZ8 and it is OK, but I tend to get frustrated easily, so I am finding it slow going http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif If you want a good strategy game you should try Europa Universalis 2. Be warned, that it has a very steep learning curve but well worth the effort in my opinion.
