destroying a star

Im a new to the game and am havin a prob with destoryin a star of rival AI what exactly do you have to do. i have a ship equiped with a stellar nucleonic torpedo and am sitting over the targeted star but cant do anything. Please need to take out the military stronghold http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif thanks
