little help for newb please

Hi, I bought SE4 only to find out that it doesnt have multiplay over lan...So now i found out about SE4 gold.. so I ordered that one because i saw it had tcp/ip support.
Does that really mean i can play this over lan like any other 4x game? (moo2/botf)

And i was wondering about that gold edition..is it really so different that there cant be a patch for the original se4 to make tcp/ip possible?

What is the big difference about se4 and se4gold besides the tcp/ip support?

Thanx in advance,
Grey

I imagine a patch would have been technically possible, but Malfador and/ or Shrapnel made a financial decision to release V1.60 as "Gold" and make players pay for it. Given that they had been continuously upgrading SE4 Classic for free for an entire year, this seems reasonable. It's a bit of a shame that Gold is incompatible with Classic in multiplayer, but Shrapnel have promised not to make a habit of doing this.

The biggest other difference was the addition of drones. You also get lots of "eyecandy" (new system types) and a bunch of community- submitted mods and things on the disc. Most importantly though, You have to be a Gold player to benefit from and share in the continuing development of the game and the mods surrounding it (I don't know of any mods being actively developped for 1.49)

(Oops... except the Bab5 mod)

There was loads more stuff changed as well. Dig out a history listing and compare V1.49 and V1.60 for a complete rundown on what was improved.

It can be played over a LAN, but I don't know what mechanics are possible. There's certainly nothing to stop you playing PBEM mechanics but using a network to transfer the files rather than email. I know someone (S_J?) wrote a lan- helper program to enable smoother LAN games, but that may or may not have been made obselete by Gold and TCP/IP.

What I'm getting round to... I don't know. I play all my multiplayer via PBEM / PBW. Never used TCP/IP. I do know that if you're hoping for real-time C&C style play then you're in for a disappointment.

C&C well... NO actually http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Masters of Orion 2, Birth of the Federation..those where my favorite time consumers (still are) Half of the time that i played those i played against a friend on my lan here.
So i was just really really hoping that SE4 gold would have normal multiplay support over lan. That is what the tcp/ip is standing for right??
So that i dont have to sent my save file manually to the other computer..

Sooo.... se4 gold does support normal tcp/ip turnbased lan game just like moo2 does??

BTW.. Atrocities? Was he also present on the old 'omega' board for birth o/t federation? if so... HI! remember me?? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The Pirates and Nomads mod is developped in 1.49.

Right. the only cavet is you must play in simultanious, not sequential, mode. That means you plot out your orders, everyone else does the same, and at the end of the turn the host runs things and gives the result.
