new to PBW
Hi
I'm thinking about starting playing PBW soon (after next weekend earliest, alittle too much happening right now) And I was wondering if there are any good pointers on how to get started... I have just registered and am looking through the site now... I was wondering if maybe the best way to start would be to jump in where replacement players are needed... or would this probably just be hopeless games abandoned by disillusioned players? -- AeoN2 -- Help a man when he is in trouble and he will remember you when he is in trouble again. |
Re: new to PBW
Considering the volume of games at PBW, I'd be surprised if there weren't any games for new players starting.
A quick glance down the list of game titles shows: NewbieGame: Needs a replacement player, currently in endgame at turn #125 DevNull Learning: Needs two more players to start. There is also "Turn Blitz #1", If you want a trial by fire. Basically, turns are every hour, no exceptions. The AIs will play most of everybody's turns. The whole thing should be over within two weeks. Low pressure, since the AIs are messing with everybody's plans. Just watch the clock for when the next turn is due, and don't worry about missing turns in this game: everybody has to sleep sometimes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

But taking over abandoned spots is an excellent way of gaining experience. You are free from any pressure to do well, becuase as you pointed out many of these empires are in hopelessly bad situations. This allows you to experiment, learn the mechanics of the game and whatnot, without working too hard on the strategy. These two tnihgs are hard to learn at the same time.
Players in exsisting games will typically give a replacment player some slack, stopping wars, etc, until you get your feet under you. They are usually just pleased to have someone controlling the empire rater than the AI. Geoschmo |

Hehe... sounds interesting... especially when I assume many/most of the players are in America? Being in Norway means I'll play my turns at a totally different time when AI's is wreaking havoc with others... and the other way around ofcourse http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Mine every strange place a ship might pass, send drones where no-one would expect, generally make myself hard to destroy... But ofcourse I am speaking theoretically now since I still get trouble with the AI http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif Also the latest game I'm playing is simultaneous movement, that is the same way the PBW works right? |

Re: new to PBW
AeoN2 and other Newbies to PBW.
The most common OOPS is having the wrong verision or MOD for the game being played/started. If it works at all it will give strange results. All of the game descriptions list the Version and MOD being used. As of 6/27/2002, the older games are typically Classic v1.49 and the newer are Gold v1.67 (patch 1). The MODs games are few and varied. MODS are fun, but maybe newbies should be familiar with the stock game first. I use the MOD launcher utility and use seperate folders for all my games. This may require some help or minor computer skills to setup. ------------------------------------------------ Good Gaming Newbies [ June 27, 2002, 23:22: Message edited by: Wardad ] |

Feel free to join Capital City. It is technically a mod game, but the mod is only to allow for a different victory condition...namely that of capturing capital worlds.
Most of the fundamentals have not changed. (Had to get my plug in...need players bad) Quote:
