Ship Prototypes

When I have a new ship design, it's flagged with the word "prototype". Does being deemed a prototype have any affect on the game itself? (i.e. a higher production cost for the first one off the assembly line?) or is it just there for show?

I means you don't actually have one built and in the fleet yet. The only signifigance is that the first one is labeled 0001. To some players, they take huge psychological blows when this ship is destroyed, but it's different for all gamers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The main difference is that you can edit a prototype design. Once you add one to a queue or build one you cannot edit it anymore. You can copy it or upgrade it, but these make new designs.

that is what you said, but he did add some misinformation to it. if you take a design off of a queue the same turn that you put it on, you can then go back and edit it.

Who here has ever cried over the loss of 0001 ship? Not me........ http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

All though if I have a ship that is 0001 or even 0002 for a long time, I will send it to the homeworld and mothball it. For historical sake.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sheesh. Sorry Geo. I just flaked out there for a minute. I just re-caffinated. But I'll stop posting for today anyway. 'Tho I'm pretty sure I had the game refuse to allow me to edit a ship that had been in a queue, even if it's out of the queue. That was for one of the many times I made an engine-less stellar manipulator. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Is there a difference between pulling a prototype out of a queue on the turn you put it in, and trying to pull it out & edit a few turns later?

Also remember that you have to hunt down every copy in any build queue, even if it is not at the front!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hmmm... now see, I was gonna test this some lazy Sunday afternoon, but if I have to test both ways, well ... I'm starting to doubt that this info is worth it.

Well, to answer questions from another thread, I'm gonna test drone warheads, thats for sure. I've ignored drones until now because getting them seems like wasted research. But they've become interesting in their uselessness, if that makes any sense
