resupplying ships at starbases
 
is there any way to give starbases the ability to refeul ships? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

i tried to create a component using the same ability as the resupply depot but it didnt work.

i know that if you modify the settings.txt file you can allow fleeting of ships with starbases and that would work but i would prefer not to do that.

Make a ship type that has the same size, picture, and required zero engines.
Put a quantum reactor into the hull, or better, put a whole slew of supply storage on it and some solar generation, so it can only resupply a few ships per turn.

in other words make a supply tender. thats a good idea. i was hoping to use starbases though as i build at least 1 at each warppoint and could continually refeul ships as they pass through. this is all prequantum reactor of course.

Oh, I thought you meant modding them.

But yeah, supply tenders would work too.

If you get enough supply pods on a ship, it may even be worth having a few go back to the nearest planet, and shuttle fresh supplies to the front rather than generating them on-site.

i just dont see any reason a starbase with unlimited supplies should not be allowed to resupply ships also.
i have modded ships so have unlimet or extra supply but just trying to add stuff to my little reality.

The starbase is only supposed to have unlimited supplies for itself, because you can not return one built in deep space to a resupply depot. If it had limited supplies, it would run out at some point. That would cripple the AIs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif It is not supposed to be able to make an infinite amount of supplies for everything that passes by.

A simpler thing if you want bases to resupply ships like before the patch, is just to make a change to your SE4/data/settings.txt file.

Change the line:

Bases Can Join Fleets := False

to:

Bases Can Join Fleets := True

The only problem with defining bases as ships, is that then they can't use the Base type, which means that you can no longer use that to limit the components, target types, and mount eligibility.

It'd be nice if we could put the Supply Depot resupply ability on a component, and then we wouldn't even have to do the clunky "create a fleet to resupply" thing. But if this worked, I think SJ would know and would have said so.
