OT Galactic Civilization - a promising game

I want to recommend you the following link

www.galciv.com

I think this game will be good if it is released in february or so. Like SEIV it will be fully moddable and supported for more than one year with new features. The designers are very capable and take attention of new ideas.

Galciv is an old OS2 4X game and it has probably the best AI of all 4X games. Now its re-released for WIN. It is primarly not a combat game. You cannot design ships and dug it out tactically, but there are alot more politic options (you have different political parties in your empire!) game than in any other 4X game.

And the max. galaxy is really HUGH. It will comprise in a later Version next year up to 1600 sectors, with each sector consisting of several star systems. Each star system has also several planets. (means 60.000+ planets to colonize. Colonization is similar to MOO2, just simpler)

I think it will be a worthy enrichment till SEV is coming out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I played it in the OS/2 days. I'd still be playing -- but I don't have OS/2. Stardock claimed that it was a lot of work shoehorning the game into Windows' limitations.

As for the AI, I could pretty well outsmart it back then. I don't know how well it's improved.

Much later they had an add-on patch that allowed you to design ships. That added a lot of fun to the game.

What steams me is, the demo costs as much as the game -- you just get free upgrades to the full Version and any patches.

I mean, seriously: demo. D-E-M-O. demonstration

Lot's of nice eyecandy 'tho. That ruined desert city was my wall paper at work for quite a while. But I told people to visualize a ruins planet in SE4 when they saw the image. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif That is so bad.

Wait wait wait... you have to pay them $45 to download the beta, and there is no demo??? That is just dumb. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Then, no multiplayer? That is even more dumb. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Stardock isn't known for being "Smart" when it comes to marketing sadly....

I recently saw somewhere Stars!Supernova went on hold until further notice. Apparently no publishers want to sink the cash to finish the game.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The OS/2 Version put in hooks to allow someone else to implemet TCPIP. There were, apparantly, no takers. Heh.

I don't want to take too much away from the programer's skill, but, I'm begining to understand, it's the gaming community that makes or breaks a game.

The old OS/2 game was not supposed to be modded, yet someone did it -- replaced the tech tree with a new one, based on a brand new sci fi tv show - Babylon 5. It was a kludge, not elegant like SE4's mods, but fun in it's own way.
