OS problems??

The Starscape mod has recently entered beta, and so far we've been having alot of trouble trying to get turn files to run on any machine but my own.

When I send the turn file (through email) to my currently only tester, he gets an access violation whenever he tries to open it. I believe we both have the latest Version of SEIV, but he is running Windows 98 1st edition, and I am running Windows 98 SE. We suspect this to be the problem, but it seems unlikely to me that OS differences would be able to cause such problems with a game like SEIV. Still, there is nothing else we can find that seems to be responsible for this bug. I even had him send me back the game file through email to see if something got corrupted en route, but the file worked fine on my system when I ran it.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Possibly.

The first thing I would want do is send the files to a wider audience, and see if the problem is related to that one player's machine or not.

Are there any unique changes you have made that you suspect may be causing problems?

I get an access violation sometimes when using the mod launcher and entering the wrong password or not using a password when I should be.

Small difs between 98 and 98SE, so that is probably not it.

Re: OS problems??

Well I am working on getting a few more testers but will have to wait a bit before they are ready.

I've made alot of changes, though mostly only to the data files (nothing in the executable or hard-coded stuff). I've also modded some of the images, but not many. Nothing that would seem to cause such a problem.

What's odd about it is that whatever the problem is, it only seems to affect simultaneous games that are created and then transferred. When I installed my mod on a similar Win98 1st edition system, and then tried to run a simultaneous game I had created on my main computer, the game crashed with an access violation, however, when I used the older system to create a single player game in the mod, it worked just fine. I then transferred that single player game to my main computer and had no trouble running it. Since I no longer have access to the older system, I wasn't able to test simultaneous games. Although it seems unlikely that the problem should have anything to do with the type of game.

I suppose I will just have to wait until my other testers can get thier SEIV's installed before cracking this bug.
