Sadness part 26 (Error report)

Something is seriously wrong with the "quarter damage against shields" damage type. I'm not sure what it is, but it seems to actually repair ships it's firing on sometimes, with no shields involved anywhere. Am I misunderstanding what "quarter damage against shields" means, or is this a bug?

I will have to test this when I get home this evening, but "quarter damage to shields" is supposed to mean 1/4 of the weapons normal damage will go to shields and the rest is lost (or absorbed by the shields or whatever). Once shields are removed, the weapon will do full damage to internal comps or armor.

Re: Sadness part 26 (Error report)

1/4 of the part of the damage that hits shields is lost, yes. Say the weapon does 100 damage. There are 20 shields. With 1/4 dmg to shields, it takes 80 damage points from the weapon to knock out the shields. 80 * 1/4 = 20 damage to shields. Then, 100 - 80 = 20 damage is done to the internals.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You wouldn't be firing against a ship with Crystalline armor, would you? That would repair shields.

Slick.

Re: Sadness part 26 (Error report)

That sounds great Fyron, but the target had no shields. No armor even. Just a space yard, a bridge, crew quarters and life support. And the red damage bar definitely went up a couple of times as I was firing at it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

EDIT: Huh, just read your post Gandalph. Are you saying that an 80 point shot would do twenty points to the shields, and that's it? Makes no sense, but it might explain things. What would be the use of that?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sounds right to me based on IF's post too. At first I too though "what's the use of that" but I guess it would be used for a powerful weapon that just happens to suck at penetrating shields. I gather that essentialy with such a weapon the enemy would in effect have 4x normal shield strength.

I was only expanding on Gandalph's post to show what happens when a shot hits both shields and non-shields.

Are you playing with gold patch 2 (1.78) or patch 3 (1.84)? In 1.78, those types of damage are broken and do not work correctly. This was fixed for 1.84.

What defenses does the target ship have?
