KOTH Player Poll (Others may look)

Just curious.

The poll requests an indication of your best recollection of how many systems separated you from your opponent. ON AVERAGE. If you have played more than one game, and if in one game you had 1 system between you and your opponent and in another, you had 3 systems between your empires, then answer "2". If you don't remember, take a calculated guess.

If you are just curious and have never played KOTH, then you may look at the results by voting with the bottom choice.

For example, I have played 1 KOTH game (in progress) and there were 0 systems separating us (we were beside each other).

I am thinking of switching to pre-aranged maps for Koth. This happens too often. I wish SE4 did a better job of spacing people out at game startup.

Not complaining, geo. Just trying to get an idea of how often the game starts with people very close to each other.

I spent some time reading the Looonnnngggg KOTH thread and seems like some people were "surprised" by how close. Like I was.

Now, giving credit where credit was due, Primitive popped in on my home system on turn 4 and he could have made a "go" for the whole game at that point. I had assumed I had a little "colonizing room" and only had colonizers around. IF he had missiles on board, then I would have had to rely on the luck of emergency building of platforms that MIGHT have stopped him, but as we all know, ships with missiles are (at least) smart enough to move in range and fire and move out of range. So, IF he had missiles on his escort, then he allowed me to continue to play. I salute that. IF, however, he had DUCs 1, then he did the right thing...not approach my planets. As a skilled player, I will assume he let me go (deference to a newbie).

I read where people like that aspect...not knowing and having to make an important early decision.

I don't like it and considering the small amount of research and resources at hand in KOTH standard starup, it makes for a potentially boring game of rolling the dice.

Games should be decide on skill and choices that begin to manifest themselves after 10 or 15 turns.

So, to gather some info, I thought I'd try a poll. It benefits me as well as any other player in KOTH as well as anyone considering trying it on for size.

I answered 5, as a ballpark. Although strangely enough, my opponent has been regularly about 9 systems away or so in my Last batch of games.

I really only had one game starting out next door.

Random placement has not been bad to me. What actually hurts more is the amount of useless systems and planets that you get in your draw... heh, actually, I like to know where mt oponnent is. It settles the tense feeling in my gut...
...well actually it doesn't. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Starting out next door is really exciting and fun. It is another strategy you need to develop, in my opinion, something you need to deal with.

Good poll.

Well, I hope for safety's sake you had some distance between you and that "upstart", Asmala... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
