But seriously, you want to reduce the number of planets?

1) Create a new folder in your se4 directory. Name it "Maxxmod"
2) Create a new folder inside the "Maxxmod" folder. Call it "Data"
3) Copy "SystemTypes.txt" from the SE4\data folder to your new SE4\Maxxmod\data folder.
4) Open up the copy of "Systemtypes.txt" with your favorite text document editor and romp through the file deleting planet entries.
Be sure to update the
"Number of System Objs := "
line to reflect your changes, and make sure the
"Obj 1 ..."
lines do not skip any numbers.
5) In your se4\ folder, there is a file called "path.txt". Open it up and find the only line in there:
"path := none"
Change it to
"path := Maxxmod"
6) Run SE4, and it will use your modded files instead of the originals, leaving you with less planets per system next time you generate a new map.

7) To restore the game to its original state, for multiplayer action, simply change the path.txt to read "path := none"

If you just want to reduce the number of planets that can support colonies, try playing with 'colonize only own atmosphere' or 'colonize only home planet type'. Those options certainly reduce the number of planets you need to worry about.

Copy all the entire data folder into "Maxxmod", even those you don't change. If the data folder doesn't contain all the appropriate folder the game will not run.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That was true up until the latest patch.
V1.84 will now use the original "\data" files to fill in any gaps in the modded files.

You can borrow Proportion's systemtypes and quadrant types files. Proportions galaxies contain new "sparse" systems with fewr planets. You can further manipulate the system frequencies by editing qudranttypes.txt Oh, you may also need stallarabilities.txt file otherwise there would be way too many planets with usefull artefacts ! On the second thought... no, you don't need stellarabilities file.

Thanks I will check out the Proportions. I want to be able to colonize other planet types so that is not an option.

Re: To Many Planets

Ok I made a directory called Maxx-Mod. In it I copied all of the files from TMD Mod into the directory. I then copied SystemTypes QuadrantTypes and Stellarabilities from Proportions and placed them in to the Data folder in my new Maxx-Mod file overwriting the TDM files. I tried it with just SystemTypes and QuadrantTypes but I kept getting errors until I added the system abilities file too. Can I play the game like this ??? The proportions sparse system is just what I was looking for.

If you can load the game, and start a new game with a random map, you did it all fine!
