New Concepts
 
I was thinking about this today.

1. Random exiting Warp Points. IE, you enter it, and where you come out you no not where it will deposit you.

2. Booby Traps. IE, a ship enters a sector, wp, planet, etc and is injured or destroyed by a hidden booby trap.

3. Planets window
send Colony Ship window
Would be helpful if it too indicated whether or not a colony ship is in route to planets.

4. Point Defense Cannons and Threat Defense Cannons.

PDC work against fighters. TDC work against Missiles, drones, and torpedos.
(I think this would be nice for a mod if it has not already been done.)

5. Fire Control or Command & Control components.
These components are required in order to put PDC or offensive weapons on a ship.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">By the time I open that window, I've got only one specific planet in mind to colonize... Then I'm back at the Planets window looking for another.
There certainly is room though, so it can't hurt.

I imagine a basic bridge would provide 2 or 3, and all weapons of the same type should be firable simultaneously at the cost of only 1 FC-point.
Given that, it would be rare to find a ship that needed extra FC.

Could be made useful by a mod, I suppose

Perhaps the best(?) solution to the planet/colony ship window would be to adapt the "delete design type" interface--click "Send Colony Ship," click planet.

Wouldn't Sector: Damage cover this? Except it doesn't go away.

Hrmm..maybe.

Could sorta be done now. Give ship hulls a massive to-hit penalty and these an equivilent bonus.

Err, doesn't it already? Left side of the window?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No it does not. The regular planets window does display this but when you click on the Send Colony ship button, a new window opens, and that window does not display this useful information.

There is room in the new window to display it, so why not have it displayed. It is very helpful

Additionally,

In the planets window, have the ability to select atmosphere type of ONLY x type. This way only planets with say Oxygen will be displayed, or perhaps you just want Methane planets to show up.

The ability to sorty only by atmosphere and have only the selected atmosphere planets show up is a must have. The way it is now, all the planets show up, and you have to scroll down to the atmosphere type your looking for. This is tedious.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Isn't there a picture of the planet? I believe planet's colour indicates it's atmosphere.

Fire Control:
I don't think it is what you mean but the Gryphin MOd has an AUX Bridge that:
Gives 15% Offensive and Deffensive Bonus
Is only available when Combat Support and ECM Lvle III are researched.
