Simultaneous movement?

Hi,
I'm in the process of setting up a new single-player game. The idea occurred to me to try simultaneous movement this time.

I've never played this way, and I'm more than a little wary: It's my intention that this particular game will be my primary entertainment for the next couple of weeks.

A detailed rundown on what simultaneous movement is like and how it differs from turn-based movement would be very much appreciated.

All of the differences are covered in the Newbie FAQ, unfortunately not all in 1 place:

Just search for "simultaneous" and read each section. That should get you all the differences.

edit: would help if I could spell.

Slick.

In many ways sim turns is similiar to normal... the main difference is in how you issue orders to your troops and how they move during the turn. You tell them to do something. But they don't do it right then. Instead you hit end turn every one places their orders and then they are executed in "days" each game turn or month being broken up into 30 days. Thus the ships move 1 space or execute 1 command every day.

This is most imporant when trying to intercept enemy fleets or timing things like blowing up a star to take out enemy fleets. Or for that race to see who makes it to the warp point force.

Also in some mods where you can get more than 30 move points on a single ship the ships in sim moves will only move upto 30 spaces and the rest of the movement will be lost. Result of 1 move 1 day rule. 30 days = max 30 moves.

There are no doubt some difference I missed but those are the ones that come to mind right off the bat.

Can always check out the newbie faq below as well. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Darn those faster posters!

Another thing, you generally have to use the attack order to attack a fleet, not the move order. The move order takes you to a certain sector, the attack order will cause your fleet to chase down (or try to) the enemy fleet. This can get very frustrating if you are both moving the same speed. I you are the No. 1 player (usual in solo games) you can move onto the enemy fleet and he will immediately move away! This is just the visual (or digital) representation of simul movement.

Diplomacy can be long-winded. You offer a treaty, next turn, he receives it and responds, the turn after you get his reply. Against other people, you can use this to your advantage if you really don't want the treaty.

In short order, though, you will get used to the differences and have difficulty remembering what turn bases was like. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
