When Was The Last Time
When was the Last time you played SE IV all night?
I can remember playing it all night for many nights in a row. All in all, next to Tribes 1 and Tribes 2, SEIV is by far the game that I have played the most all nighters of. In fact I played it most of the night back in 2001 at the TribesCon 3 event in Portland. I think I made a few sales for Shrapnel and Malfador that night. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif But it has been a long long while since I have actually stayed up all night playing a game of SEIV. I don't know why, perhaps burn out, purphaps RL stress, or just maybe something else. I can remember the hours of endless "one more click" game play that drove me to consume mass amounts of caffeen and cold pizza. Today I was wondering about why I don't play it any more, and I guess the answer is simple, with all things, no matter how much you enjoy and love them, comes a point when you must simply say enough is enough for now and move on. The epicness of this game is a wonder to behold for sure. Oh yes it could be greatly improved with more indepth game play and lots of eye candy and new features to make it more addictive than it currently is, but that is for another time, and hopefuly another game such as SE V. It would be nice to have trade routes, commodities to trade and sell, better AI, better political and diplomatic game play, orbital habitats, star gates, and tons and tons of other goodies in SE IV, but I know they will never happen. SE V is what I am excited about now. I am very excited about the potential that that game will bring to the table, and how it will set the standard for many more all night games. In the future, and perhaps sooner, many of you will begin to think ahread to SE V as many of us already have. The great thing about SEIV is that it is one of the most addictively fun games I have ever played, and I despite not having played it in a while, I still enjoy coming to these forums and reading the post by new players who have just discovered the game. SE IV is by far one of the best games ever made, and I dare any one to stay up all night and play it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: When Was The Last Time
It was one night February 2002. I was in an emotional spiral dive. By habit started the game. Renamed several TDM races after my X and her kds. Proceeded to trash them. I took pleasure in glassing thier planets. What a rush that was.
Till you mention it, I never thought of SEIV as therapy. Go figure. Edit: I used a systemsname.txt filled with obnoxous names insulting her and her kids. Hmm, mabye I should be telling my therapist this. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif [ May 01, 2003, 15:06: Message edited by: Gryphin ] |
Re: When Was The Last Time
With SE2 and 3, there was often that feeling that 20 more turns would win the game. But the 20 turns always seemed to turn into 200 turns and the night was slipping into day. And the SE2 demo took forever to resolve large battles on the machines of the day.

I remember the birds. The birds would always start and I knew I had only one hour, at best, before the sun came up. I used to hate the birds: they were like little tattle-tails, bragging that they'd busted me and soon the accursed daystar would be coming to punish me with the accountability that the morning after bring to any night of fun. Stupid birds.
I don't know when the Last time I stayed up all night with a game was. It might have been in the Last year, but it happened quite commonly in '96 - '00 or so. I remember staying up until I could no longer understand the game; it only took about twenty hours of wakefulness for me to get loopy, and not too much more until I set Math down somewhere and couldn't find it again. Once I couldn't play the game anymore, be it Civ II, SMAC/X, MoO II or SE IV, the choice left to me was sleep or bad poetry. I could also sit still and listen to the auditory hallucinations that started about eighteen hours into the day, but eventually those would lull me to sleep. I have found that twenty-four hours without sleep is an excellent catalyst for bad poetry, especially haiku. The really charming part of the experience would be waking up later, finding the poetry (or my Last save game) and trying to puzzle out what the bleep I was thinking at the time. |
Re: When Was The Last Time
I always tried to avoid all nighters. Not out of any sense of responsibility or anything. But just because of the bad decisions mentioned below. As soon as I found myself doing stuff that a few minutes later I couldn't either A> remember doing or B> couldn't for the life of me understand what in the name of all of creation I was doing with such a stupid move... I would stop in fear of destroying my beautiful empire and goto sleep. This ussually happened at about 1 to 3 AM.

Re: When Was The Last Time
lol I had an all nighter once with SE4... I don't remember much but I remember there was one guy left and he had less than 10 systems... I had at least 30 and yet I still lost...
Thats why I don't do all nighters anymore lol |
