OT: Help with really slow XP network
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with an insanely slow XP Home computer when browsing a network.
I hooked up a new XP Home computer to our small (6 computer) TCP/IP network at work and it browses the network insanely slow. Like it takes 2 or 3 minutes to open a network folder with only 2 or 3 files in it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Folder with lots of files just wont open at all. I added a similar computer a couple months ago and just ran the network wizard and it works great. also anyone know a good forum for PC tech questions like this? Re: OT: Help with really slow XP network
are you opening win 2 k shares ?????
If so it is rather slow. Plus there are many variables that you need to mention DHCP, Windows messenger etc... These all cause lots of traffic if you do not need it. Or is your home network an active directory ?? Dave more details please.... ALso make sure everything has the same subnet etc... |
Re: OT: Help with really slow XP network
You'll want to make sure the firewall built into WinXP isn't active, as it can cause problems.
As for sites, Microsoft's Support site is usually a good place to start: Microsoft Support Page When XP came out there were issues/problems connecting to non-XP computers, but they should have been addressed by now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif |
Re: OT: Help with really slow XP network
Mmmm now if I understood the questions.... (How the hell did I become our companies network guy!!)
this is a pretty simple network I think. A few XP and win98 computers pluged into a switch. The only protocol installed is TCP/IP. For net access a router is plugged into the switch. The other computers can access the new XP one no problem. As far as I can tell the network setting on the new XP computer is the same as on the other XP computers. |
Re: OT: Help with really slow XP network
If all else fails, you could try imaging the harddrive of one of the other XP machines, and cloning it... then just change the computer name to make it unique on the network.
Google came up with this, that looked somewhat useful. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthre...hreadid=119296 |

Thanks for the help guys. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
And my warmest thanks to Dell tech support who told me there was nothing wrong with the computer and that it wasn't their problem. Strange how putting in a new network card solved all the problems. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif |
