Stupid Question

I was trying to create a new tech Category, something similar to temporal weapons and such, but a little more expanded, meaning I would create new ship types and sizes.

I backed up my files, but somehow the backups got corrupted. I also left the CD out of its case one day, came home from work, and saw a nice big crack in it. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if my mod attempt didn't fail miserably. I "fixed" the problem somewhat, but I can only build escort ships, no troops, no colony ships, nothing. And I have half a tech tree.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this without buying the game again, please let me know.

New to the Boards, so go easy on me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Stupid Question

Next time don't mod the base files. Copy them to another folder and mod THAT.

Which files did you change?

Re: Stupid Question

The trick to modding is to create a modfolder.

Inside of c:\program files\se4 there is data, pictures, etc.

Create a new folder, called "My mod", say.
Then for any files you want to change, place them inside the "my mod" folder as if it were the SE4 folder.

So, you would have c:\prog files\se4\mymod\data\components.txt
of c:\prog files\se4\mymod\pictures\combat\torps.bmp
and so on.

Then your original files are pristine and fresh, no worries.

In order to use your mod, edit the path.txt (in the se4 folder with the SE4.exe), and change the "path := none" to "path := mymod"
Presto changeo, SE4 starts using your mod, and any files it dosen't find, it will look in the defaults for.

This also lets you install a whole host of mods, and flip between 'em easy.

As for restoring the original files:

Re: Stupid Question

I think all files in data folder are included into latest TDM mod pack. Get them from it. If you still have a problem, tell what files you edited. I(or somebody else) will e-mail them to you. As long as you don't ask for se.exe file, there is no hint of piracy in your request http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
