Searching a topic-reply number

When one searches a topic, we are given a reply number.

Other than counting from the first post, is there any way of determining the number of a reply.

Like when I am given that reply #888 is what I may be looking for in a thread with 1600 Posts, there is no way that I am going to locate that post by counting.

I believe that each page has 15 Posts so you could do some multiplication to reach the answer. I could be wrong though... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Hmmm....

I just checked and the number of postings per pages seems to be a function of the length of the postings.

It would be nice if there were only 15 postings per page.

Re: Searching a topic-reply number

I think the way it works is that there are 15 Posts per page starting with the first page and then any additional Posts get flowed over onto the next page. This means that the very Last page of a topic will have a variable number of Posts on it, but that all the other pages have 15 Posts. Makes it hard to pinpoint exactly where post #888 is, but will at least get you within a page or two... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

LOL http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I think we may be on different pages. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

An example may help to clarify it.

If there is an extremely long, long post, my impression is that the post will occupy 1 page.

However, I have only done one test and it only had seven Posts on the first page.

But maybe you are talking about something different?

Check the Newbie FAQ forum. The first page has 15 Posts on it included one very long Newbie FAQ... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif leading me to believe length is not an issue.

You are right! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

My mistake.

Hmmmm....

Wonder where I got the 7 count?

Hmmmm....

Just a thought. Why 15? Much better 10 or 20.

Like using 10, the 888 post would be on page 89.

Using 15, some of us may have to use a calculator.

Although in this particular case a mathematical trick allows us to calculate it mentally as 900/15 = 60th page.

tbontob, are you tracing Fyron's past statments in the You-know-what thread? It's possible to have some great fun by quoting some of them and replacing 'Gore' with 'Fyron' right about now...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">It is possibly 15 becuase 15 = 2^4 - 1; the forums do run on computers, and sometimes it is easier for the programmer if things get arranged around numbers that computers use naturally.
