Combat replay shows other empires\' fights?

For the first time I noticed the "combat replay" button on my log screen (TDM game vs. AI). I figured it would show me replays of whatever battle I just fought that I had selected in the window. Not so.

In fact, it shows me replays of battles between two other empires in the game. (I have a trade and research alliance with one of the two empires and am at war with the other, if that matters.) I can't figure this one out. Anyone know what's happening?

Shouldn't I be seeing my own battles? Of course, it's nice to get a peek at how these other AI players are fighting each other, but it's odd.

You didn't have a lonely ship in the same system that the fight took place?

It will show you any battles if you have a ship, planet, base, or units in the sector in which they occur. If you have peace treaties with the other empires, your ships will not participate in combat. Your ships will attack any/all empires that you don't have a peace treaty with.

Slick.
