overlapping fleets?
If I have several fleets at a particular location, will they all engage in battle together? If so, then each fleet could be assigned a specific function: e.g., one defending my unarmed ships (with orders NOT to break fixation), others going on offense against the planet, while still others hunt down enemy unarmed ships. Also, is there any way to specifically go after stellar manip ships? Thanks! Joe

Re: overlapping fleets?
yes
no you cannot assign specific orders (except that you might set the unarmed ship into the fleet) but there is NO hold position orders in the game - its either attack or retreat no, except you might want to try "has no weapons, weakest" for two first firing priorities. |
Re: overlapping fleets?
Thanks. Is there any way to have ships stay out of combat but fire if approached? Then, I could put the stellar manip ship at protected position in formation, but still be protected...

Re: overlapping fleets?
Yes, movement and fire orders are two different things. Ships set to Don't Get Hurt for movement will still use their fire orders - they just won't relocate to carry them out. However, I think once a ship does "Don't Get Hurt", they break formation and thus I think will use the targetting priorities of their ship class, and not of the fleet they are in, though I'm not positive about that.
You might also run some simulator tests - I think that target type "most powerful" might be based on cost, so stellar manip ships would be the most expensive... but that's just a hunch. PvK |
Re: overlapping fleets?
hmm.. using max range/dont get hurt, or the other way around should solve your problem. And PvK, you can set Dont Get Hurt as your fleet strategy and have it work, cant you?

Hmmm….
This is interesting. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I have never been able to figure out the meaning of “Strongest” and PvK’s idea that it is the most expensive is a good contender. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif My thoughts for consideration and debate about TARGETING PRIORITY ORDER: A) Nearest/Farthest…distance to the enemy ship in sectors? B) Largest/Smallest…size of ship (eg escort, frigate, destroyer etc.)? C) Most Damaged/Least Damaged…two possibilities: ..Ca) Number of components destroyed? ..Cb) Value of components destroyed? D) Fastest/Slowest…speed of the enemy ship E) Strongest/Weakest…resource value of the enemy ship (PvK’s idea)? F) Has Weapons/Doesn’t Have Weapons…two possibilities: ..Ship has no weapons in it’s design? ..Ship has no weapons in it’s design or all ships weapon’s are destroyed? G) We are allowed a selection of four of the above. What Algorithym does the computer use in selecting its target? For example, let’s say I select A, B, C, D in that order. Does it assign 40% to A, 30% to B, 20% to C and 10% to D with the enemy ship which has the greatest percentage is the selected target? Or is some other algorithym at work? |
Re: overlapping fleets?
Strongest means one of two things (nothing to do with resource cost):
Has the most hit points or Can do the most damage (possibly with to hit chances factored in) I believe it is the second one. Quote:

"It goes in order. It finds all ships that meet A, then of those, what meets B? Then C, then D, and then random if there is more than one ship left to pick from." So, if I have A = unarmed and B = armed then I will never fire on an armed ship, right? Any way to have my fleets go after e.g., unarmed ships first, then armed? And, while I'm at it, how does "damage percent" work? Just keep pummeling until you do X% then quit? Does "Damage targets until weapons are gone work as advertised? When do people use it?
