Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

Agreed. However the F35B will have to able perform as a fighter (rather than only as a fighter bomber) in Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm service, since it will be the only fixed wing aircraft the two new,...

Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

The F35 seems to have been under development for ever (over 15 years certainly) and they only recently found out that ejecting from it is highly dangerous?

Since UK built her new aircraft carriers...

Re: British Army and active armour protection

I see your point but if you have a large number of tanks, and/or other AFV's, fitted with ATGM countermeasures will this not serve to also confuse the missiles?

Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

Have always wondered how the F35 was going to replace the A10 in doing CAS, as it seems an awfully expensive aircraft to put in the way of casual ground fire from rifles, MG's and auto cannon, etc.

Re: Dismounting Crews

related to this question.

From my reading and hearing veterans speaking, WWII tank crews who had their tank seriously hit, and immobilsed, almost always tended to immediately 'bail out', before...

Re: British Army and active armour protection

Don't know so much about the game mechanics, but in reality, it is the automatic detection of a ATGM, or a laser painting the vehicle, and near instant automatic counter measures that are the real...

British Army and active armour protection

The British Army is looking at assorted active armour protection systems including passive and active systems.

First up is the German MUSS system where sensors detect a threat and activate...

Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

Mind you the end of air to air dog fighting has been repeatedly predicted (before WWII, before Vietnam to name two I can think of) and it has yet to happen. A bit like the end of the Tank...

Re: 20 pounder vs. T54's front hull

[QUOTE=Aeraaa;835053]"(source: WW2 ballistics armor and gunnery by Lorrin R. Bird and Robert D. Livingston pages 30-31, although it speaks mainly about 17 pounder, 20 pounder wasnt much different)."...

Re: Acceptable US Casualties Against 3rd World Armies

I think this, sort of, fits here: This is some talks from the UK Royal United Services Institute on adapting the military for new challenges.
For my money the third speaker deserved more time...

Re: Acceptable US Casualties Against 3rd World Armies

Yes and no. If a section (squad I think in the US) on a routine patrol takes a serious casualty what you say can, sometimes, be true: ie, a man down halts the patrol (but it often also results in...

Re: Acceptable US Casualties Against 3rd World Armies

PS
Please remember Western soldiers are relatively expensive (although none of them are paid enough) and there are fewer and fewer of them.

In my day (1980's) the British Armed Forces (Royal Navy...

Re: Acceptable US Casualties Against 3rd World Armies

Speaking as a Pom who lives in Aussie, I agree with what Suhiir said.

Modern (ie, certainly 2000 onwards) western censors, firepower and body armour all tend to reduce casualties against 3rd world...

His reply was, "Very few to not many,...

UK v Germany after June 1940

After many tries it seems that no matter if one does not set desert, if you do a UK v Germany Game after June 1940,, until sometime in mid 1941 or so, all the UK vehicles, at least, come up in...

Everything you could ever want to know about FRES and Ajax

This is the whole sorry tale of the British Army and FRES that resulted in the rather heavy, but otherwise far from earth shattering Ajax.

It also has some interesting things to say about US...
