I made a mod yesterday that took out the no-research a few other treaty elements from the game. Sadly it didn't help much. The AI seems very limited in how much they expand and how many research...

Gotten input from several people, it appears that the AI, no matter what difficulty continually cripple each other by entering into treaties with the No Research element attached.

No idea about crystal, but organic ships use more organic resources and less minerals and their dreadnoughts are much larger than normal ships.
