It does. I have also used (fire and) ice drakes with non-resistant troops. I just spread them thinner. Not then as a major strategy, just something that can help.

I put them in small groups just behind a group of cold-resistant melee troops, with orders to Fire Closest. This way, they usually use their short-range breath attack without getting hurt by enemy...

Ice Drakes can be good if you have other cold-immune troops, and place them appropriately.

Infantry of Ulm is no good in small numbers, but it gets strong when one has the patience to mass enough...

Ya, the description of the Venerable Warrior unit says they have "centuries of experience", but apparently in terms of skills, this only got them +1 to attack and defense (11 each).

TC can also make Jade Armor, and Sword of Swiftness is another good weapon. Frozen Heart. Sprinkling single water gems on a bunch of W1 mages for a sudden Summon Water Elemental tidal wave...

I think Air Elementals are still very much worth it. They can tip the scales in battles (especially if you do several at once), and still only require an Air-1 mage with one gem.

Ok, but that is a good use. Your new thugs who wait a few turns all those +1's in their first battles, without using any magic slots during combat, and you can share the skull behind the lines...

Bah. It lets you stack yet something else on your warriors, with no risk, indefinitely. I generally make at least one in all my SP games where I'm paying attention to trying to keep some heroes alive.
