After given it some more thought: yes, self healing pets would be no problem to mod at all, either give them a healing spell to use (that could be pretty annoying, but OTOH you could make it without...

hmm, -tilegen -width2 -height2 works well for me.
It is not quite apparent that it did work at first. You only see a 15x15 portion of the combined tile like editing a single one.
