Ouch, that's tough. FWIW, Arcane Bolt did work well when it hit and if the caster didn't get hit with blood vengeance. And this was an old vanilla game so with CBM boosting the spell's precision and...

I ran a test and with 10 holy levels worth of priests calling god from a province with a temple it took 5 turns for the pretender to return, matching the comments above.

In case anyone missed it, please be aware that the pentagram in the middle of the map connects provinces - so you have access to more nations than just your direct neighbors.
