Re: SE V issue with SAVING ship design files

I'd assume it has something to do with the new slot layout for ship design. I'd probably make saving designs a bit more complicated.

Re: [OT] 4X games?

Hmm, there's Ascendancy (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/ascendancy), although I suppose it's not all that 'unknown'. There's also slightly different games, like Reunion...

Re: OT: Computer upgrade advice

You need identical and clean drives to set up a raid array, from what I know. You also need a raid controller.

I've to agree with CW; backup drives are rather unncessary for home/personal use...

Re: OT: Building a new computer...

It'd definitely work better with simultaneous movement, that's true. However, the best approach might be something similar to how Master of Orion 3, which also uses simultaneous movement, processes...

Re: OT: Building a new computer...

I don't think your approach to SEV multi-threaded would work. You could have one core per AI, but that doesn't help you any because the AIs do their turns one after the other, with their decisions...

Re: OT: Building a new computer...

True, graphics and FPS seems to be where most of these increased number of cores are wasted. If SEV had good support for multithreading I'd consider getting a 4core even if only for that game,...

Re: OT: Building a new computer...

Well, as mentioned in that Q&A you linked to, the UE3 does gain some small benefit from more than 2 cores. Crysis, another major title released within a few weeks, is supposed to benefit greatly from...

Re: OT: Building a new computer...

To my knowledge there's no real cons against quad core( except price, and bigger cooling and power requirements ) compared to dual core. Intel's quad core CPUs, the only quad cores available at the...

Re: OT: Building a new computer...

Quad Cores aren't completely useless. You will get a faster computer overall. However, few applications yet take advantage of all the cores. Photoshop and 3DStudioMax are programs that benefit...

Re: OT: Building a new computer...

Think I'd rather go for a GeForce 8xxx card, for shader model 4.0/DX10 support.

Re: Anyone played Lost Empires?

Yah, turn based rock. Might have a look at this myself, a 4x with challenging AI isn't something you see every day.

Re: OT: Computer benchmarks

Hmm, a e6850 (300$ on Newegg) might be worth it if you also overclock it to 3.3-3.5ghz. That'll give you the best performance possible today, except in applications that support quad core( which are...

Re: OT: Computer benchmarks

By the way, how's processing times with your E6600 ?

I'm stuck with a 3 year old p4 3ghz HT myself, and I've often wondered how much faster the lower clocked new CPUs are, compared.

Re: OT: Computer benchmarks

Don't think it's worth it just yet. Final quarter of 2007 there will, apparantly, be released new Intel and AMD quad core CPUs( this time a 'real' quad core from Intel ), and the 9xxx line of Nvidia...

Re: Expanding Atmosphere Types

Lots of space for floating cloud cities yeah, but wouldn't most people consider creating a floating city 'a bit more difficult' than an atmospheric dome?

Just trying to find the logic with Gas...

Re: Expanding Atmosphere Types

Wouldn't Gas Giants argueably never be 'un-domed' if one were aiming for that kind of realism?

Re: Expanding Atmosphere Types

Many neat ideas. I'd love to see the game take more factors into account when it comes to planets and colonies, though. Gravity, for instance. I imagine a low-G population would have great problems...

Re: OT: The Future of Computer Strategy Games

Bioshock *is* another Oblivion, in my opinion. Yeah sure, it's better than most games out there right now, but that's because of the lousy quality of today's games in general, not because Bioshock is...

Yeah that's what I thought you meant. Hmm, there is that possibility I suppose. Let's hope that file isn't included in that check. I can't see it doing any danger to let clients have different...

Re: SE:V History v1.52

Huh EdKolis? I believe it only means that you wont be able to load a simultaneous mode game if you update the game/mod or otherwise change your data files. So if you start a simultaneous mode game...
