Do you know how damage is dealt between decks ?
In case of your "directional armor" (only Outer Hull elements), what of the lower and upper decks while the middle deck "armor" is not destroyed yet ?

Actually the planets DO rotate around the star.
Open the system view using the 3D view.
Then bring your mouse cursor to the extreme right of the screen. It will automatically activate the Planet...

Most of the formulas include %range%, but you noticed that the damage is not recalculated often ? does that mean it calculates the damage per range once and then uses this calculation for a long time...
