Most mages stay at home and research for most of the game. Or take on forging/blood hunting/ritual casting duties. Those get nothing but research boosters or boosters to help with whatever they're...

I don't have the game in front of me, but when you start a new game there should be a screen where you can add more AI nations. It defaults to 1 human and the rest AI. The default is a random nation...

Or each death causes a loss of one skill level in each path.

Nothing says empowerment goes away. Base + Empowerment - deaths = current magic.

No, it just takes current path level and subtracts one when he returns.

Any empowerments, whether they're raising him higher or just bringing him back to the starting level are still counted.

I'm pretty sure anytime someone returns from death, they have a chance of healing afflictions (immortals, twice-born, forced shape-shifts, etc)

The arrows that miss, will also still be flaming, but that's OK...

Even a handful of 1st turn fliers (imps or some such) can lead to a lot of friendly fire and buy your troops a round or two to close.

I'll stand corrected on the booster spells. And keep an eye out for them.

I suspect you don't see the Air and Water ones unscripted often just because of the circumstances.

How many gems can a mage use above the cost of the spell? I'd thought it was only one, but I just had a Communioned up Dakini use 3...

I suspect they are not, but I haven't actually checked. Or, more accurately that they are ruled exactly the same way ours are. In other words the AI "scripts" them. Easily enough checked in the debug...

No. Once the script is done, they pay no attention to it. Soul Slay and Enslave mind are both pretty common choices for those that can cast them, but they're just as common if you spent the script...

The evaluation of actual damage spells seems pretty straightforward. We can quibble about whether it's better to do very likely damage to lots of little things or go for the long shot Soul Slay type...

That sounds right.

Do note that all the other ways of boosting path level do let you spend more gems: booster items, booster spells, communions.
For example, a F1 mage could case a F3 1gem spell...
