Yes, there is a reason. Actually reasons. I had to choose between escort and small transport, and I selected small transport because it has more damage resistance due to those sat laying components, and that cargo space can be used in many ways like transporting troops or captured population all over my empire. I chose sat layers over cargo bays because they are cheaper so I was able to build the ship in one turn without emergency build.
