I noticed that too. I am sure its just a glitch that will get fixed in the next patch.
Fighters do use up supplies while in space. I recall loosing my only carrier in battle, and all my fighters were stranded. That sucked.
They all ran our of supplies and as a result, were picked off by the enemy.
