"ships do not move through mine fields"
Thats the marked mine sectors (a square with a M).
With the default settings, all known enemy minfields is automatically marked, and you can also mark sectors manually.
And the AI's use mines, but they not good at finding the smart places to lay them.
So they might be anywhere.
