I know the feeling. When I read some of my comments about the US, I sound like I believe that the government is perfect and I love every aspect of it. In reality, I complain all the time about dumb things going on in this country. It's just that statements made against the US government are so overblown or just downright false that I take a hard-line stance in defense of the US.
