Well, Attack Ship and Defense Ship are 'types' of ships. However, you can make several variations of for example Attack Ship type - they can have different name (but it's not required), different components on them, different sizes, etc. But they all are Attack Ship type. You can add these 'variations' *** much as you like (AI selects randomly which variation to build), but you can't make new types (I tried it).
